The President and the Board of Italian Society of Cardiovascular Echography (SIEC) announce to all members and echocardiography people the sad news of the death of Professor Jos R. T. C. Roelandt, honorary member of our SIEC, one of the founders of the field of echocardiography and a pioneer in European Cardiology.
His career starts with Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree magna cum laude from the University of Leuven (Belgium) in 1964 and a specialization in internal medicine and cardiology at the same University and at the University of Leiden (NL). He joined the Thoraxcentre in Rotterdam in November 1969 and began research in clinical echocardiography.
He obtained his PhD degree cum laude from the Erasmus University Rotterdam where he became professor of echocardiology in 1983 and was appointed chairman of the Department of Cardiology of the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam from 1987 to 2004.
He was appointed honorary member of the American Heart Association, the Italian Society of Cardiology, the Philippine Heart Association, the Croatian Society of Cardiology, the Slovakian Society of Cardiology, the Dutch Society of Cardiology, the Italian Society of Cardiovascular Echography, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the European Association of Echocardiography.
Jos Roelandt served on the Editorial Board of numerous major cardiology journals, and was the author of over 1,000 papers and 19 textbooks. He was also the mentor of 37 doctorate theses at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. He delivered several prestigious lectures in the major European and American meetings.
As associative activity, Jos Roelandt served as chairman of the ESC Working Group on Echocardiography (1976-1982) and as president of the Dutch Society of Cardiology (1995-1997), the International Cardiac Doppler Society (1997-1998), and the International Society of Non-Invasive Cardiology.
He is the Founding Editor of the European Journal of Echocardiography serving as editor-in-chief from 1999 to 2010.
During his last months of his life, he continued to be active in the international echocardiographic research and teaching, participating in the most important meetings, keeping on giving his wise suggestions to all of us.
The Italian Society of Cardiovascular Echography feels that his passing is a great loss for European Cardiology and especially for the echocardiography community and would like to express their sympathy and deepest condolences to the wife and family of Prof. Roelandt.
